Seriously, I love polka dots. I have an entire section of my closet devoted to shirts and dresses to fit my irrational attraction and appreciation for them. If I was a smart shopper (which I never will be), I would be responsible and buy solid colors that never go out of season. But, my print-centric brain makes me love polka dots, and flowers, and stripes, and….I digress.
Kate Spade also shares my deep respect for polka dots, which makes me a huge fan of my Kate Spade Colbie Hill purse (I got this purse during one of her flash sales, which makes me feel a lot less guilty). But between the supple leather and polka dot interior, it’s one of my favorite things.
So in honor of those who suffer from a serious obsession, I created some of my favorite pieces I’ve stumbled accross online.
There is always that friend you aspire to be like, and my friend Shannon happens to be that person for me. Besides being an incredible photographer (she took those cute photos of Brian and I a few weeks back), she’s one of the most kind, generous and stylish women I know! So when she gets cute things, or recommends cute things to me, I can’t help but take her suggestions to heart. While shooting a wedding she told me about this “Naked” palette from Urban Decay, which I picked up this weekend at Sephora. Needless to say, I’m in love….
Okay, so I realize it’s a gross exaggeration to be in love with inanimate objects, but I’m in like-like with this pallete. It has all the colors I need for any occasion, anytime forever and ever. Plus it came with a brush and eye primer, so it was basically a steal right?
The colors are gorgeous, and now I have a reason to make my eyelids a little more stylish! Although it was a bit of a splurge, I justified it by realizing that it really will last forever (coming from a girl who realized her blush was from sophomore year of high school the other day – I’m not proud). Add this to the category of “things Shannon inspired me to buy”…there will be more posts to come following this theme I’m sure!
I’ve been craving a really great date night lately, which coincides for my craving of new beautiful peices….dangerous!
I love this rich purple Peplum Therapy top paired with a simple skinny jeans (these are J Brand, but any will do). Add in some lovely gold accents: Channel earrings, (maybe one day?), Rebecca Minkoff Mab Chain Wallet (who can say no to a supple black leather clutch?), and a trendy gold stick necklace, and you’ve got a sleek night-time look. The heels are a bonus to give you that “I can take on the world” attitude”, which is good on any date (from 1st to 115th). Grab a white blazer for when it gets chilly, and you’re ready to hit the town.
I’m obsessed with these fun watercolors by Marc Johns! His sketches are cute, whimsical and the little notes he writes are adorable. I’ve always wanted to be one of those incredibly talented people who can just sketch on a napkin and come up with something genius, but I can barely sketch a squiggle without feeling like a failwhale (maybe in another life!). Yet, Marc Johns makes it all look too easy – genius on a whim! My friend Shannon told me that there’s an entire Marc Johns store in NYC, so I’ll have to add that the “NYC dreaming list”….one day!
Until then, I might just have to buy the cards and frame them for the bathroom – until I can get my hands on the real thing! Xx
Threads: The many shades of Her Royal Highness
Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, has been making waves in the fashion world years before she married His Royal Highness William, Duke of Cambridge in 2011. However, with fame comes an even larger scrutiny for fashion faux pas and praise for fashionable achievements, and Her Royal Highness has risen to the occasion, becoming an international fashion star. From high profile royal galas to everyday errands, the Duchess of Cambridge looks flawless.
Here are a few of her brightest and most iconic dresses over the past few years that have captured the attention and praise of fashionistas around the globe.
Her Royal Highness was ravishing in a gorgeous royal red number by Alexander McQueen for Queen Elizabeth II’s diamond jubilee earlier this summer. While some questioned the boldness of the color (arguing that she was upstaging the lighter clad Queen Elizabeth II), the color and cut exquisitely compliments her skin tone and physique, making this outfit one of our favorites to date. She styled her ensemble with an asymmetrical matching hat by Lock & Co., one of her favorite pieces that she’s worn for a few other formal occasions. Paired with nude pumps and a delicate gold dolphin broach, no one can deny that this ensemble is a high fashion hit.
When arriving at the Calgary airport in July during North American tour last year, Her Royal Highness wore this darling yellow dress designed by Jenny Packham. This dress is perfect for both high profile engagements and everyday wear, featuring a flouncy, feminine and fun silhouette with charming oversized buttons. Once again, Kate perfectly styled her dress with nude platforms and a vintage box clutch, toning down her bold yellow dress.
This green stunner by Diane Von Furstenberg(the connoisseur of all things bold and beautiful), was worn by Her Royal Highness for a reception held in her and His Royal Highness William’s honor last summer. Like many of her fashion choices, Her Royal Highness balances the delicate line of modest and feminine effortlessly, choosing an ensemble that covers her shoulders and falls above her knees. She paired this Kelly green silk “Maja” dress with another stunning vintage clutch and black heels, and loose flowing curls — a simple but elegant styling choice.
Wearing another gorgeous Jenny Packham gown, Her Royal Highness turned heads at the Olympic concert event at Royal Albert Hall earlier this summer. She looks Grecian in this turquoise gown, which is draped perfectly on her petite frame. I especially love the lace appliques and delicate buttons up the back bodice of the dress, giving her flowing dress a delicate demeanor. Paired with a matching jewel encrusted belt and silver Jimmy Choo heels, this dress has been deemed an all time fashion critic favorite.
Her Royal Highness wowed fashionistas with a royal purple Issa dress during her Canadian visit last year. The chic jersey dress was paired with a fitting jeweled maple leaf broach (first worn by Her Royal Highness Queen Elizabeth on a visit to Canada in 1951) to match the Canada Day celebration the two were attending. Opting to tone down the vibrant purple hue, Catherine matched the dress with black stilettos for a softer look. Her loose bun and diamond drop earrings complimented her attire, giving her a simple and elegant overall look.
In a variety of stunning bright hues, Her Royal Highness Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge has deserved the title of a true fashion maven. By managing to remain both feminine and modest, she has continued to rock the fashion world with bold and elegant ensambles. Although she has already come a long way, we’re excited to see more of her fashion triumphs in the coming years.
I’ve already developed serious blogging guilt – the kind of guilt that develops when you’ve neglected your blog for a week, and you know you have too much to say. I was going to try to keep blog guilt out of my new blog, but it’s finally caught up to me….
Last week I went to Santa Fe for my sole summer vacation. I wish I could have had a bit more of a transition to real world to work life (AKA more vacations like last year and less working), but it turns out that the real world isn’t like that! I’ve had to put on my big girl pants and settle for a 4 days weekend/vacation for the summer months, but it was wonderful, so I really can’t complain!
After a very long travel day (which included quite an extensive Ice cream adventure with my grandfather – that man has a sweet tooth!), we made it to Santa Fe. The first stop was the farmers market, which was conveniently located a block away from our hotel. Maybe it’s the inner Madisonian in me, but I love a good farmers market! Anywhere I travel, I have to go to a farmer’s market and get a local flavor for the city (and subsequently pretend that I’m a local, minus the camera I tote around). Plus, who doesn’t love delicious food and beautiful flowers? The Santa Fe Market was beautiful, full of fresh desert flowers, succulents, fry bread (yum!), and fresh fruits and veggies. I could imagine going there every Saturday morning…..
We also went on some lovely adventures around downtown Santa Fe and Taos, a cute city nearby. New Mexico has such a fun and relaxed air to it, so I enjoyed capturing some fun moments and spaces that were so different than everything I was used to back in Wisconsin. From cute doggies (that’s Brooklyn the boxer!), to lavender and churches, everything was beautiful.
I’ll try to write more later, but here’s at least a good sneak peek 🙂 If it’s my only vacation I suppose it’s justifiable to spread it out, right?

Summer Beauty Products:
With summer in full swing, it’s important to have the freshest beauty products to carry you through the rest of the season. My favorite beauty products balance funky bold colors and delicious natural scents to add a fresh squeeze of fun to your summer. Here are some of my top picks for summer that will rejuvenate your body from head to toe!
One of my favorite classic summer products is Smith’s Rose Bud Salve. It was first formulated in 1892, and since then not much has changed, including the adorable vintage tin. Rosebud Salve does it all and works as a perfectly pink tinted lip-gloss, blemish treatment and scented hand lotion. The mix of essential oils smells like fresh roses, which makes for the perfect summer scent. The 0.8 oz. size is small enough to fit in any purse or clutch, making it easy to have on hand for surprise blemishes or chapped lips during the summer. Rosebud Salve can be found at many stores, but it’s easiest to find at Sephora for $7.
Summer is the best time for bold, funky colors. Daring nails are the perfect way to express yourself, or accent any outfit. With the neon craze this summer, I’ve been loving Essie’s new neon polish colors, like their bright orange “Action” color, juicy pink “Camera,” tantalizing purple “Bahama Mama” and lush “Turquoise and Calcos.” These bold and flirty colors add some serious color to your world and are perfect for the beach or fun summer adventures. $8 at most drug stores.
Get your beach on with Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray. This saltwater-based spray gives your hair fresh, right-off-the-beach volume and texture to create faux wind-blown tresses. Stylists have often used salt water for elegant lasting volume, so having the perfect blend at home is ideal for summer styling. The spray’s salt-infused formula (with added seaweed and kelp extracts for rich hydration) is perfect to spray on the go to give yourself a taste of a California summer. $24 online at Bumble and Bumble.
A light moisturizing lotion is a must during the summer and Garnier’s Skin Renew Lotion is my all time favorite. This little bottle does it all, and at an affordable price. Besides protecting your skin from the scorching summer sun with SPF 28, it also reverses signs of skin damage from summers past. This lotion also refreshes and rejuvenates your skin by reducing fine lines, uneven skin tones and even acne spots with added lycopene, magnesium and vitamin C. With all these fantastic benefits, Garnier’s Skin Renew Lotion will become one of your must haves. $12.99 at major drug stores.
I love the reviving and calming scent of lavender in the summer time.
Avalon Organics Nourishing Lavender Shampoo is the ideal blend of lavender and other botanicals, and the delicious scent stays with you throughout the day (giving you a nice kick start to your morning!). The nourishing part of this shampoo is the hydrating organic botanicals and essential oils that add luscious vibrance and shine to any hair type. Best of all, this line of products is created without harsh preservatives or moisture stripping chemicals, leaving your hair naturally beautiful and gentle. $10.50 atwww.avalonorganics.com.
Although I try to get out and worship the sun as much as possible during the summer, I always find that my friends are more tan than me. In order to make it seem like I haven’t been behind a computer at work all day (which I always am), I like to add some illuminating bronzer to my daily summer routine. My favorite is M.A.C’s Bronzing Powder in Refined Golden, which is the perfect balance of glimmery gorgeous color. With a few quick cheekbone strokes, I can go from ghostly to glam in 30 seconds flat. I also like to add bronzer to my neck and shoulders to really create the illusion that I’ve been enjoying the sun far more than I have. $23 at www.maccosmetics.com
Whether it’s adding a touch of colors to your toes or illuminating bronzer for a pick-me-up, these beauty products will keep you chic all summer long at an affordable price. Best of all, these products will last well beyond the summer months as you ease on into the cooler fall weather.
My fantastic aunt (okay, fake aunt, but we all have one of those), is getting married this coming weekend. We’re ventuing to Santa Fe, NM for the big day, and I couldn’t be more excited! Besides being my middle name sake (ala Lorraine), she’s one hip and fabulous woman, and I couldn’t be happier for her! I’m sure there will be many photos and adventures that will be documented on my blog, so I thought it would be best to give everyone fair warning.
Here are some of my Santa Fe musings getting me excited for the coming weekend – thanks for the further distraction Pinterest!
